Crab Apple

Malus sylvestris · aka wild apple, malus

Crab apple branches carry clusters of glossy miniature apples in shades of red, gold and burgundy, often still clothed in autumn leaves. Their weight and orchard character make them a natural focal texture for large-scale seasonal and editorial designs. Florists use them to add depth, movement and a sense of ripe abundance to autumn arch installations and tall arrangements. Firm and long-lasting, the fruit holds its colour well when kept cool.

Conditioning

Cut the woody stem on a steep diagonal and split the base to maximise water uptake, as the heavy fruit draws steadily. Strip lower foliage and any fruit that would sit in the water. The miniature apples are firm and long-lasting; condition in cool water and keep cool to hold both fruit colour and leaf.
