Torch Ginger
Torch ginger sends up a tall, sturdy stalk topped by a glossy, waxy inflorescence of tightly overlapped bracts, most often in vivid red or pink — hence its other name, porcelain rose. A member of the ginger family from Southeast Asia, it is a dramatic tropical focal with excellent vase life and real presence in large designs. Florists use it for tropical weddings, installations and statement arrangements where scale and saturated colour are wanted. Its sculptural, torch-like head reads as exotic and luxurious in equal measure.

Recut the woody stem at a steep angle and stand it in deep, clean water, refreshing it often. Rinse inside the bracts to remove any trapped debris. Keep the stem warm and store it above 12C to avoid chill damage. Strip any lower leaves that would sit below the waterline.
