King Protea
The King Protea is the largest of all proteas and the national flower of South Africa, crowned by a bowl of stiff, pointed bracts around a dense central cone. Florists prize it as a bold, architectural focal flower that anchors modern, luxury and autumnal designs. A single bloom can carry an entire arrangement, and its woody stem gives an exceptionally long vase life. It also dries beautifully, holding its sculptural shape for months.

Recut the woody stem at a sharp angle and place it in clean, deep water with flower food containing glucose. Strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline, as submerged foliage fouls the water quickly. Keep proteas cool and brightly lit to prevent the leaf blackening they are prone to. To dry, hang or stand the stem upright in a warm, airy spot.
