Banana Leaf

Musa × paradisiaca · aka musa leaf, plantain leaf

Banana leaf is a broad, glossy paddle of foliage prized for its clean tropical geometry and versatility. Florists use it whole for bold architectural greenery, roll or fold it to line the inside of glass vases, or cut it into strips and sculptural forms for modern and tropical designs. Inexpensive and widely available year-round, it brings instant lushness and scale to installations and event work. It is best used fresh, as the cut blade gradually dries and curls at the edges.

Conditioning

Wipe both surfaces clean and, if using in water, recut the base and stand it in a deep container; the blade also holds up out of water for lining vases and wrapping. Roll or fold gently along the midrib to shape it, but avoid hard creases that tear the leaf. Keep above 12C, as chilling causes brown patches and blackening on the glossy surface. Mist lightly and keep out of hot draughts to slow drying and curling.
