Chinese Silver Grass

Miscanthus sinensis · aka Chinese silver grass, maiden grass, eulalia

Miscanthus, Chinese silver grass, is a tall Asian ornamental grass prized for the silky, fan-shaped plumes it throws up in late summer and autumn. The feathery flower heads catch the light with a silvered, blush-pink sheen and mature to soft cream, giving florists a graceful, architectural line for tall arrangements and installations. Some forms carry finely variegated blades as a bonus. Fresh plumes are fleeting and shed, so miscanthus is most often used dried, when its elegant, wind-brushed form lasts indefinitely.

Conditioning

Sear or recut the woody stem ends and give a long drink in cool water; strip the blade-like leaves that would foul the water. Fresh plumes are short-lived and shed, so a little hairspray or light fixative helps. To dry, cut the feathery panicles just as they emerge, before they fluff fully, and hang upside down in a dark, dry place.
