Installation Rigging for Florists: Weight, Anchors, and the Physics Nobody Photographs

How floral installations actually stay up — weight math per metre, ceiling and truss anchor rules, wind loads on arches, the safety factors professionals use, and when to hire a rigger.

There is a genre of Instagram reel every florist knows: the ceiling installation in mid-collapse, wire and hydrangea coming down on a dance floor. It circulates as comedy, but the physics underneath is not funny at all — floral installations are structural projects that happen to be wearing flowers, and the industry's dirty secret is how many are hung on hope. Here is the engineering half of the craft, the part that never makes the portfolio.

Start with a real number: what flowers weigh

The foundational discipline is refusing to guess. Working figures from our production sheets: dense fresh garland, 5-15 kg per metre with mechanics; suspended clouds and chandeliers, 20-60 kg each; flower walls, 80-150 kg framed. And water is the ambush — soaked mechanics can double a piece's dry weight, which is why everything gets weighed wet, as it will hang, not as it left the studio.

That number drives every downstream decision: hardware rating, anchor choice, how many people carry it, whether the venue's beautiful old beam is a mounting point or a decoration.

The anchor rules (the non-negotiable part)

Rule one: never anchor to anything unverified. "That beam looks solid" is not a load rating. The acceptable list is short: venue rigging points with documented capacity, hired truss systems, or points installed and signed off by the venue's technical team. Chandelier hooks, sprinkler pipes, decorative beams and ceiling grids are all famous last words.

Rule two: 5:1 safety factor. Hardware — shackles, wire rope, slings, carabiners — rated to at least five times the piece's wet weight. A 30 kg cloud hangs on 150 kg-rated components, minimum. Rated means stamped and purchased from rigging suppliers, not the hardware-store hook aisle.

Rule three: secondary safety. Every overhead piece gets an independent backup — a safety cable on its own anchor, slack in normal service, catching everything if the primary fails. It costs minutes and removes the catastrophic branch of the fault tree.

Rule four (freestanding): arches and columns are sails. Outdoors, wind load on a two-metre flowered arch can exceed 40 kg sideways — hence 20-40 kg of ballast per leg (water tanks, steel plate, sandbags dressed in fabric and greenery), wide stances, and guy lines when the forecast argues. The build order that keeps timelines honest

Installations run on a rule the flowers themselves impose: structure early, flowers late. Frames, anchors and load tests happen first — load-test with static weight before any botany, at whatever hour the venue allows. Greening follows. The flowers — fragile, thirsty, camera-facing — go on in the final hours, into water sources built during structure phase (foam-free mechanics scaled up: chicken-wire beds, water tubes, moss).

The planning ratio that surprises new event florists: on a serious installation, flowers are the last 10% of the timeline and roughly half the budget; everything else is structure, logistics and rig time. Quoting installations as "a big bouquet, but bigger" is how studios lose money and sleep simultaneously.

Know the line, and hire past it

A working florist can own: garlands and their fixings, tabletop and pedestal structure, freestanding arches with proper ballast, wall frames that stand on the floor. The line is overhead: if a piece hangs above people and you cannot produce the load calculation, the anchor rating and the safety factor on paper — hire a rigger. Their day rate is a rounding error against the alternative, serious venues increasingly demand certified rigging anyway, and the photograph looks exactly the same. The only thing the client never sees is the engineering — which is precisely why it has to be there.
