Flower Encyclopedia — License & Terms of Use

1. What the Encyclopedia contains

The Encyclopedia is a structured dataset covering commercial cut flowers used in floristry. Each entry combines:

• Botanical facts (species, family, origin) that are public knowledge
• Original editorial writing produced by Lacy Bird — descriptions, conditioning notes, care recommendations, design guidance
• Original structuring choices — categorisation, tagging, substitution mappings, difficulty and price tiering
• Reference photography licensed to Lacy Bird

The expression and curation of this material — the specific wording, the structure of each entry, the assembled dataset as a whole — is a copyrightable creative work owned by Lacy Bird. The underlying botanical facts are, of course, public.

2. What you may do (permitted uses)

You are free, without asking permission, to:

• Read, save, and share pages of the Encyclopedia for personal, educational, or editorial reference.
• Cite and quote individual entries in articles, academic work, journalism, blog posts, forum threads, or classroom material, with attribution and a link back to the source page.
• Link freely to any Encyclopedia page from any website.
• Print pages for classroom, workshop, or in-shop reference use.
• Translate short excerpts for non-commercial use with attribution.

Attribution format: “Lacy Bird Flower Encyclopedia, [flower name]”, with a link to the source page.

3. What requires our written permission (restricted uses)

The following uses require our prior written permission and, in most cases, a commercial license:

• Republishing the dataset or substantial portions of it on another website, app, print product, or dataset — whether free or paid.
• Training machine learning modelson the Encyclopedia’s text or images.
• Incorporating Encyclopedia content into a commercial product — flower-selection tools, subscription apps, shop-management software, wholesaler catalogues, wedding-planning platforms, and similar.
• Automated scraping or bulk copying of Encyclopedia pages for any purpose other than search-engine indexing.
• Re-hosting the reference images outside of non-commercial editorial context.

4. What you may not do

• Claim authorship of Encyclopedia entries or present them as your own work.
• Remove attribution or the license notice when reproducing Encyclopedia content.
• Represent that Lacy Bird endorses your product, service, or publication.
• Use Encyclopedia content in a way that misrepresents facts about flowers or their handling.

5. License summary — CC BY-NC 4.0 (adapted)

The above terms are broadly compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license, with two adaptations:

1. ML training is explicitly restricted and treated as a commercial use requiring permission.
2. Bulk automated scraping is restricted to search-engine indexing.

If any provision of these terms is unenforceable in a given jurisdiction, the CC BY-NC 4.0 baseline applies to the remainder.

6. Warranty disclaimer

The Encyclopedia is provided as a reference for the working floristry community. Care recommendations, conditioning notes, and symbolism reflect our studio’s experience and current industry consensus, but individual results depend on your local supply chain, climate, and handling practices. Lacy Bird makes no warranty of fitness for a particular purpose and accepts no liability for outcomes based on Encyclopedia guidance.

7. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Encyclopedia grows. Substantive changes will be announced on the main Encyclopedia page. The effective date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
