Jakarta Masterclass — 6–8 December 2024

6–8 December 2024 — Jakarta, Indonesia — the first Indonesian capital edition after two Bali intensives.

Jakarta was the first time the tour left Bali for the Indonesian capital, and the room chosen for it felt like a considered contrast to the outdoor spectacle to come. Classes gathered inside a warm, brick-and-timber studio, a black-and-white flower photograph on the wall and the city pressing at the tall windows. Much of the teaching happened here first: an instructor sketching structure on a flip chart, a slide introducing the Lacy Bird team, participants seated close with notebooks and cups of iced coffee before a single stem was cut.

The palette split cleanly into two moods. On the tables, buckets ran to lilac and cool violet — blue hydrangea, spotted phalaenopsis, hot-pink gerbera and burgundy carnation, wrapped in soft blush paper. Students built these into generous hand-tied bouquets, and there were quieter box arrangements too, one worked entirely in green and cream with pincushion protea, chartreuse lisianthus and pale orchid.

Then, outdoors, the register changed entirely. On a rooftop plaza, with a glass office tower and clipped garden trees behind, the signature installation went up in hot orange and magenta: a black grid frame threaded with coral roses, marigold, magenta blooms, birds of paradise, dark anthurium and, grounding it all, hanging clusters of green bananas. Up close it was almost overwhelming, roses and orchids packed shoulder to shoulder against the skyline.

It closed the way these editions tend to, with people and their flowers. The group posed together outside the studio, several of them crouched and standing with violet bouquets in their arms, and out on the plaza someone stood at the centre of the finished installation, arms easy, the city rising behind.

The three days

Every touring edition runs the same Lacy Bird programme, rebuilt around the local market's flowers:

• Day one — colour theory and the house palette, the composition system, the boxed arrangement and the round commercial bouquet.
• Day two — the spreading bouquet, wrapping and presentation, and a professional photoshoot of every participant's finished work.
• Day three — large-scale event decor and installation, the business of floristry, and certificates.
