How to Keep Scented Geranium Fresh — Care & Vase Life

Scented Geranium care from a florist: how to choose fresh stems, condition them step by step, and get 5-7 days of vase life from every stem.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

Scented geranium is grown for its softly lobed, velvety leaves that release a rose-like fragrance at the lightest touch. Florists prize the foliage as an aromatic, garden-fresh green that fills and frames bouquets. Its ruffled leaves add gentle texture and a nostalgic, cottage-garden character. It is especially loved in bridal and tablescape work where scent matters.

TL;DR. Scented Geranium: 5-7 days of vase life. Choose firm mature stems. Select firm, mature stems and strip the leaves from the lower stem.

Scented Geranium — care and vase life

How to choose fresh Scented Geranium

In care terms this is a low-maintenance flower in the mid price bracket, with a seasonal peak in June, July, August. Vase life is set before the flowers reach the water, so at the shop choose firm stems with no limp patches, fresh green foliage without yellowing, and a clean cut end with no slime or sour smell at the water line.

For varieties, palette and season, see the Scented Geranium encyclopedia entry.

Conditioning, step by step

Select firm, mature stems and strip the leaves from the lower stem. Condition in cool, clean water for several hours, as young foliage can flag if not well hydrated. Keep cool and handle gently to protect the soft leaves.

The base protocol, on top of the species specifics:

  1. Work with a clean tool in a clean vase — bacteria are the number-one enemy of vase life.
  2. Recut the stem on a sharp diagonal, taking off 2-3 cm.
  3. Strip every leaf below the waterline — submerged foliage rots and fouls the water.
  4. Let the flowers drink somewhere cool, out of direct sun and away from heat sources.

Why a diagonal cut and clean water do most of the work — in the general flower conditioning guide.

How long Scented Geranium last in a vase

Expect 5-7 days with proper conditioning. To reach the top of that range: change the water every 2-3 days, recut a centimetre at each change, keep the flowers cool and away from direct sun and fruit, and remove spent blooms so they don't foul the water for the rest.

How this compares with other flowers — in the vase life by species guide.
