When it is at its best
Amaryllis is a midwinter flower, at its best from November through February — exactly the gifting window. A potted bulb takes six to eight weeks from planting to bloom, so one given in early December flowers for the New Year; buy it already in bud if you want it open on the day.
Cut, amaryllis last about 7–14 days; keep them cool and topped up with fresh water.
How to gift and display it
As a gift the potted bulb wins: no care instructions, just light and patience, and it performs for weeks. As cut flowers the stems are hollow and top-heavy — a thin cane slipped inside keeps them upright, and they last one to two weeks. Cut the stem end at an angle and keep the water shallow.
