Calla Lily Wedding Bouquets: Types, Meaning & Designs

Calla lilies in the bridal bouquet — white and mini coloured callas, what they mean, how to design with them and how to keep them looking sculptural all day.

The calla lily is the most graphic flower a bride can carry: one clean, curving spathe on a smooth stem, no clutter, no foliage. A handful of callas reads as a finished bouquet — which is why it has become the modern minimalist choice.

Despite the name, the calla is not a true lily. It is Zantedeschia, from the arum family, and it behaves very differently from Oriental or Asiatic lilies — no staining pollen, almost no scent. For true lilies see the lily wedding bouquet guide.

The calla types you'll encounter

Large white calla (Zantedeschia aethiopica) — the classical wedding calla: a long, thick stem and a wide white spathe. The choice for a tall, architectural bouquet.

Mini callas — smaller spathes on slimmer stems, in a wide palette: white, cream, blush, yellow, sunset orange, burgundy and near-black. They bend easily, so they work in hand-tied and cascading shapes.

Why callas work in a bridal bouquet

  • No staining pollen — safe next to a white dress.
  • Little or no fragrance — comfortable in a warm venue and close to the face.
  • Hold well out of water — the waxy spathe stays fresh through a long day.
  • Sculptural on their own — even 5-7 stems make a complete bouquet.

Symbolism

  • White calla — magnificence, beauty, purity. The modern bridal reading.
  • Coloured callas — burgundy and near-black read as drama and confidence; yellow and orange as joy.

Safety notes

Callas contain calcium oxalate crystals: the sap can irritate skin and they are mildly toxic if eaten. They are far less dangerous to cats than true lilies, but keep them away from pets and children all the same.

Bouquet designs with callas

1. Pure white calla (modern minimalist)

  • 7-15 white callas
  • Lace or silk ribbon wrapped high on the stems

Reads as: modern, architectural, minimalist. Photographs sculpturally.

2. Callas with green anthurium

  • White callas of different heights
  • 1-2 green anthuriums
  • Trailing green amaranth

Reads as: fresh, graphic, a little tropical.

3. Black or burgundy mini callas (evening wedding)

  • 9-15 dark mini callas
  • A few dark leaves or grasses
  • Velvet ribbon

Reads as: dramatic, editorial, evening.

4. Coloured mini calla (modern autumn)

Reads as: modern autumn, warm, sophisticated.

Practical notes

Handle stems gently. Calla stems bruise and mark easily — hold them by the base, not the spathe.

Shape the curve in advance. Mini calla stems can be gently bent with warm hands to follow the line of a cascade; do this the day before, not on the morning of the wedding.

Keep water shallow. Callas prefer a few centimetres of cool water; deep water makes the stems soft.

Wrap the stems. A calla bouquet shows its stems, so finish them with ribbon or lace, and keep them dry where the bride holds them.

Cultural notes

Mexico — white callas (called alcatraces) are a traditional bridal choice with strong artistic associations, famously painted by Diego Rivera.

Modern European weddings — the calla is the go-to flower for a minimalist, monochrome bride.
