How to Keep Oriental Poppy Fresh — Care & Vase Life

Oriental poppy is the big, blowsy garden poppy — enormous silky bowls of scarlet, coral or blush cradling a boss of near-black stamens. Dramatic and painterly, it is a coveted focal for garden-style and editorial work but is almost never sold commercially because of its brief vase life. Cut it at dawn in tight bud and sear the stems, or the flowers collapse within hours. When they do perform, few blooms are as arresting.

Conditioning, step by step
Cut early in the morning at the cracking-bud stage, just as the hairy calyx splits. Sear the freshly cut stem ends in boiling water for 15-20 seconds or hold them to a flame to seal the bleeding latex, then condition in deep, cool water for several hours. These blooms are seasonal, short-lived and rarely commercial, so use them promptly.

- Recut the stem on a sharp diagonal, taking off 2-3 cm.
