Delphinium Meaning — Symbolism, Colours & Gifting

What do delphiniums symbolise? Their meaning in the language of flowers, colour by colour, plus when to give them — a florist's gifting guide.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

One of the few flowers that delivers a true, saturated blue — the pigment is real, not dyed. Delphinium provides the vertical line in summer wedding arrangements, reaching 150 cm on strong stems. The Belladonna group (single-flowered) is more airy; the Elatum group (double-flowered spikes) is denser.

TL;DR. Delphiniums stand for ardent attachment, big-heartedness and positivity in the language of flowers. Colour shifts the message — red for love, white for purity, pink for gratitude.

Delphinium — meaning and symbolism

What Delphiniums symbolise

In the language of flowers delphiniums carry meanings of ardent attachment, big-heartedness and positivity. A bouquet is never only decorative — the flower you choose, and the colour you choose it in, is a message. That is what makes delphiniums such a considered gift: they say something the card alone cannot.

For the botany, varieties and full profile, see the Delphinium encyclopedia entry.

Delphiniums by colour — what each shade says

Delphiniums come in several colours, and each one tilts the meaning:

  • White delphiniums — purity, sympathy and fresh starts.
  • Blue delphiniums — calm, trust and the rare and hard-to-find.
  • Lavender delphiniums — grace and refinement.
  • Purple delphiniums — admiration, dignity and enchantment.
  • Pink delphiniums — gratitude, admiration and gentle affection.

Delphiniums in a meaningful bouquet

Meaning works best when it is intentional. Choose the colour for the message, keep the number of stems in mind (in many traditions odd numbers are for joy), and let the recipient know what the flowers say. Then give them the care they deserve — see how to keep delphiniums fresh — so the message lasts as long as possible.
