Gardenia Meaning — Symbolism, Colours & Gifting

What do gardenias symbolise? Their meaning in the language of flowers, colour by colour, plus when to give them — a florist's gifting guide.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

Gardenia is a glossy-leaved evergreen shrub prized for its ivory, rose-form blooms and one of the richest fragrances in floristry. Its creamy, tightly furled petals bruise to brown at the lightest touch, so it is reserved for high-end work where its perfume and elegance justify the care. Florists use single blooms in corsages, boutonnieres and bridal bouquets, often wired and backed with the plant's own dark foliage. Nothing else delivers the same heady scent and jewel-like white form.

TL;DR. Gardenias stand for purity, refinement, secret love, sweetness and joy in the language of flowers. Colour shifts the message — red for love, white for purity, pink for gratitude.

Gardenia — meaning and symbolism

What Gardenias symbolise

In the language of flowers gardenias carry meanings of purity, refinement, secret love, sweetness and joy. A bouquet is never only decorative — the flower you choose, and the colour you choose it in, is a message. That is what makes gardenias such a considered gift: they say something the card alone cannot.

For the botany, varieties and full profile, see the Gardenia encyclopedia entry.

Gardenias by colour — what each shade says

Gardenias come in several colours, and each one tilts the meaning:

  • White gardenias — purity, sympathy and fresh starts.
  • Cream gardenias — understated, quiet elegance.

When to give Gardenias

Gardenias are a natural fit for weddings, bridal bouquets and anniversaries. Match the colour to the sentiment — love, thanks, congratulations or comfort — and the bouquet does the talking. For seasonal timing and what pairs well, see the Gardenia entry.

Gardenias in a meaningful bouquet

Meaning works best when it is intentional. Choose the colour for the message, keep the number of stems in mind (in many traditions odd numbers are for joy), and let the recipient know what the flowers say. Then give them the care they deserve — see how to keep gardenias fresh — so the message lasts as long as possible.
