Hyacinth Meaning — Symbolism, Colours & Gifting

What do hyacinths symbolise? Their meaning in the language of flowers, colour by colour, plus when to give them — a florist's gifting guide.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

The hyacinth is the fragrance flower of early spring — a densely packed spire of florets that perfumes a room within minutes. Grown almost exclusively in the Netherlands for the global cut trade. The stem-sap causes contact dermatitis in some people; wear gloves when conditioning.

TL;DR. Hyacinths stand for sport, play, constancy and rashness in the language of flowers. Colour shifts the message — red for love, white for purity, pink for gratitude.

What Hyacinths symbolise

In the language of flowers hyacinths carry meanings of sport, play, constancy and rashness. A bouquet is never only decorative — the flower you choose, and the colour you choose it in, is a message. That is what makes hyacinths such a considered gift: they say something the card alone cannot.

Hyacinths by colour — what each shade says

Hyacinths come in several colours, and each one tilts the meaning:

  • White hyacinths — purity, sympathy and fresh starts.
  • Blush hyacinths — tenderness and new romance.
  • Pink hyacinths — gratitude, admiration and gentle affection.
  • Coral hyacinths — warmth and lively affection.
  • Red hyacinths — love and passion.
  • Purple hyacinths — admiration, dignity and enchantment.
  • Blue hyacinths — calm, trust and the rare and hard-to-find.
  • Yellow hyacinths — friendship, joy and optimism.

Hyacinths in a meaningful bouquet

Meaning works best when it is intentional. Choose the colour for the message, keep the number of stems in mind (in many traditions odd numbers are for joy), and let the recipient know what the flowers say. Then give them the care they deserve — see how to keep hyacinths fresh — so the message lasts as long as possible.
