Peony Meaning — Symbolism, Colours & Gifting

What do peonies symbolise? Their meaning in the language of flowers, colour by colour, plus when to give them — a florist's gifting guide.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

The peony is the queen of late-spring floral design. Its lush, densely-petaled head and short, dramatic season have made it the most-requested wedding flower in the northern hemisphere. Peonies open from marshmallow-firm buds to bowl-sized blooms over 24–72 hours, giving the arrangement a living quality that unfolds through the event. Commercial cultivars include Sarah Bernhardt (blush), Coral Charm (coral fading to peach), and Bowl of Cream (white). Off-season peonies are grown in Chile and New Zealand for northern winter supply, but at 3–4× the price.

TL;DR. Peonies stand for prosperity, romance, honor and compassion in the language of flowers. Colour shifts the message — red for love and honor, pink for romance and marriage, coral for fleeting beauty.

Peony — meaning and symbolism

What Peonies symbolise

In the language of flowers peonies carry meanings of prosperity, romance, honor and compassion. A bouquet is never only decorative — the flower you choose, and the colour you choose it in, is a message. That is what makes peonies such a considered gift: they say something the card alone cannot.

For the botany, varieties and full profile, see the Peony encyclopedia entry.

Peonies by colour — what each shade says

Peonies come in several colours, and each one tilts the meaning:

  • White peonies — honor, bashful modesty and a soft apology.
  • Blush peonies — tenderness and new romance.
  • Pink peonies — romance, marriage and good fortune, the classic wedding peony.
  • Coral peonies — warmth and a fleeting, changing beauty.
  • Red peonies — love, honor and prosperity.
  • Yellow peonies — friendship, joy and optimism.
  • Burgundy peonies — deep, committed love.

When to give Peonies

Peonies are a natural fit for weddings, anniversaries, Mother's Day and engagements. Match the colour to the sentiment — love, thanks, congratulations or comfort — and the bouquet does the talking. For seasonal timing and what pairs well, see the Peony entry.

Peonies in a meaningful bouquet

Meaning works best when it is intentional. Choose the colour for the message, keep the number of stems in mind (in many traditions odd numbers are for joy), and let the recipient know what the flowers say. Then give them the care they deserve — see how to keep peonies fresh — so the message lasts as long as possible.
