In short. Holly at Christmas: the oldest Christmas green — glossy leaves and red berries, the backbone of the wreath and table. In flower symbolism holly means winter; festivity; perseverance.

Why holly say Christmas
Holly is the oldest Christmas green there is: glossy spined leaves and bright red berries that the pagan midwinter kept for luck and the Christian season took for the crown of thorns and drops of blood. Sold as berried ilex branches, it is the backbone of the wreath, the mantel and the table — decoration more than bouquet, but pure Christmas.
Which colours for the season
Red berries on dark evergreen are the classic — the reason holly reads Christmas at a glance. Ilex also comes with orange and yellow berries for a warmer or more modern table, and the variegated, cream-edged leaf adds light to a dark green mass.
When it is at its best
Berried ilex is at its best from November through January, cut just as the berries colour. Choose branches heavy with fruit and, if you can, the female varieties — only they berry.
Cut, holly last about 14–28 days; keep them cool and topped up with fresh water.
How to gift and display it
Holly is decoration: work berried branches into a door wreath, along a mantel or down the centre of the table. Keep cut stems in water or damp foam so the berries stay plump and do not drop, and mist them in a heated room. One honest note — the berries are toxic if eaten, so keep them clear of small children and pets.
More than a single flower
