In short. Paperwhites at Christmas: Christmas in a bowl — forced white narcissi, intensely fragrant, the season’s classic bulb project. In flower symbolism paperwhites means renewal; purity; hope.

Paperwhites — a flower of the Christmas season

Why paperwhites say Christmas

Paperwhites are Christmas in a bowl: a handful of bulbs sat on pebbles and water on a bright sill, throwing up clusters of small, intensely fragrant white stars in three to five weeks. They are the classic forced-bulb project of the season — as much a gift of anticipation as of flowers.

Which colours for the season

Paperwhites are white, and that is the point: clean, snowy clusters that read pure and wintry against evergreen and silver. Their strength is scent and simplicity, not colour — let them be the white note in a red-and-green season.

When it is at its best

Force paperwhites from late November so they bloom across December into January. From bulb to flower is roughly three to five weeks, so a bowl started on the first of December is open by Christmas. As cut stems they last only five to seven days.

Cut, paperwhites last about 5–7 days; keep them cool and topped up with fresh water.

How to gift and display it

Sit the bulbs shoulder to shoulder in a shallow bowl of gravel with water just touching their bases; no soil needed. The scent is powerful — wonderful to some, overwhelming to others — so give them a room with air. A splash of clear spirit in the water keeps the stems short and stops them flopping.

More than a single flower

Paperwhites are one thread of the season — for the amaryllis, wreaths and berried greens that make up a Christmas table, see the full Christmas flowers guide.
