Brodiaea

Brodiaea hybrida · aka cluster lily, triteleia

Brodiaea carries loose, airy umbels of starry blue-violet flowers atop bare, wiry stems, giving it a light and modern silhouette. Native to the grasslands of the American West, it is valued by florists as a long-lasting bulb flower that adds soft clouds of true blue and violet to late-spring and summer designs. Often sold interchangeably with the closely related triteleia, its leafless stems keep arrangements clean and contemporary. It bridges spring and summer palettes with an easygoing, meadow-inspired charm.

Conditioning

Cut the slim, leafless stems and condition in cool water with flower food, allowing the umbel of buds to open over several days. Brodiaea is long-lasting for a bulb flower, so recut on arrival and it will keep opening in the vase. The bare, wiry stems need no leaf stripping, but keep the water clean and cool. Store around 4-6C to hold the buds before use.
