Brodiaea Meaning — Symbolism, Colours & Gifting

What do brodiaeas symbolise? Their meaning in the language of flowers, colour by colour, plus when to give them — a florist's gifting guide.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

Brodiaea carries loose, airy umbels of starry blue-violet flowers atop bare, wiry stems, giving it a light and modern silhouette. Native to the grasslands of the American West, it is valued by florists as a long-lasting bulb flower that adds soft clouds of true blue and violet to late-spring and summer designs. Often sold interchangeably with the closely related triteleia, its leafless stems keep arrangements clean and contemporary. It bridges spring and summer palettes with an easygoing, meadow-inspired charm.

TL;DR. Brodiaeas stand for grace, calm and elegance in the language of flowers. Colour shifts the message — red for love, white for purity, pink for gratitude.

Brodiaea — meaning and symbolism

What Brodiaeas symbolise

In the language of flowers brodiaeas carry meanings of grace, calm and elegance. A bouquet is never only decorative — the flower you choose, and the colour you choose it in, is a message. That is what makes brodiaeas such a considered gift: they say something the card alone cannot.

For the botany, varieties and full profile, see the Brodiaea encyclopedia entry.

Brodiaeas by colour — what each shade says

Brodiaeas come in several colours, and each one tilts the meaning:

  • Purple brodiaeas — admiration, dignity and enchantment.
  • Blue brodiaeas — calm, trust and the rare and hard-to-find.
  • White brodiaeas — purity, sympathy and fresh starts.

When to give Brodiaeas

Brodiaeas are a natural fit for bridal bouquets. Match the colour to the sentiment — love, thanks, congratulations or comfort — and the bouquet does the talking. For seasonal timing and what pairs well, see the Brodiaea entry.

Brodiaeas in a meaningful bouquet

Meaning works best when it is intentional. Choose the colour for the message, keep the number of stems in mind (in many traditions odd numbers are for joy), and let the recipient know what the flowers say. Then give them the care they deserve — see how to keep brodiaeas fresh — so the message lasts as long as possible.
