Homemade Flower Food — recipes that actually work
Three tested homemade flower food recipes, why each ingredient matters, and what actually happens when you use lemonade, aspirin, or a copper penny.
Every packet of commercial flower food is roughly the same three ingredients: sugar for energy, an acidifier for water uptake, and a biocide to kill bacteria. That's it.
Which means you can make working flower food at home with three kitchen ingredients — and skip every folk remedy that doesn't actually work.
TL;DR. The working homemade recipe is three ingredients: 2 tsp sugar (energy) + 2 tsp lemon juice or white vinegar (acidifier) + 1/4 tsp bleach (biocide) per litre of cool water. This delivers 20-50% more vase life than plain water. Sprite, aspirin, pennies, and vodka do not work.
The working recipe
Per 1 litre of cool water:
- 2 teaspoons white sugar
- 2 teaspoons white vinegar or lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon household bleach
Mix in the vase before adding flowers. Do not use hot water — it dissolves sugar faster but shocks stems.
Refresh every 2 days. Discard old solution, rinse the vase, mix fresh, recut stems.
Do not double concentrations. Higher amounts feed bacteria faster than they feed flowers.
Why each ingredient matters
Sugar — the energy
Cut flowers can no longer photosynthesise. They need external carbohydrates to continue opening buds and maintaining structure.
Commercial food is 80-95% sucrose or glucose. Table sugar provides the same molecule.
Concentration: 1-2% of solution (5-10 g per litre). Higher feeds bacteria faster than flowers.
Lemon juice or vinegar — the acidifier
Water at neutral pH 7 travels slowly up cut stems. Water at pH 3.5-4.5 is absorbed 30-50% faster because xylem vessels stay open longer.
Commercial food uses citric acid. Lemon juice (also citric acid) and white vinegar (acetic acid) both work.
Do not use apple cider vinegar — it contains sugars that feed bacteria.
Bleach — the biocide
Bacteria multiply in cut-flower vase water within 12-24 hours. Bacterial biofilm blocks the xylem, starving flowers of water even when the vase looks full.
Household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) at 1/4 tsp per litre kills bacteria without damaging stems.
Do not use more — high bleach concentrations burn stems.

Three variations of the working recipe
Standard recipe
- 1 L water + 2 tsp sugar + 2 tsp lemon juice + 1/4 tsp bleach
For any common cut flower — roses, chrysanthemum, carnation, lisianthus, alstroemeria.
Vinegar variation
- 1 L water + 2 tsp sugar + 2 tsp white vinegar + 1/4 tsp bleach
Same result; use vinegar if lemon juice isn't available. Slightly sharper smell.
Vodka-modified variation (specific use)
- 1 L water + 2 tsp sugar + 2 tsp lemon juice + 1/4 tsp bleach + 1/2 tsp vodka
The vodka adds slight ethylene inhibition — useful for particularly ethylene-sensitive flowers like carnations and sweet peas. Do not use more vodka; 3%+ concentration wilts stems.

The recipes that don't work
Every folk remedy has been tested. Here's what studio testing and commercial research shows.
Sprite / 7-Up / lemonade
The internet loves this one. Soda contains sugar and citric acid — two of the three ingredients we want. But it also contains high sugar concentration (way over 1-2%), no biocide, and preservatives that don't help.
Result: works briefly, then bacteria bloom explosively. Vase life ends up shorter than plain water.
Aspirin
Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) has a mild acidifying effect. Roughly equivalent to a very weak lemon juice solution.
Result: 5-10% gain vs plain water. Significantly worse than the working recipe.
Copper pennies
Pre-1982 U.S. pennies were mostly copper with mild antibacterial effect. Post-1982 pennies are copper-plated zinc with essentially no copper exposed to water.
Result: does nothing. Skip.
Vodka alone
Vodka contains ethanol, which slows the plant hormone ethylene (which causes wilting). But the concentration needed to matter (3-5%) also injures cut stems.
Result: at safe concentrations, no meaningful benefit.
Sugar alone
Sugar in water without acidifier or biocide feeds bacteria faster than it feeds flowers.
Result: actively reduces vase life vs plain water.
Bleach alone
Kills bacteria but provides no energy and no acidification.
Result: modest gain vs plain water; worse than the full recipe.
When to use commercial vs homemade
Commercial flower food:

Storage and shelf life
Mix fresh each time. Refrigerate leftover solution overnight only. Discard after 48 hours.
Dry ingredients (sugar in the pantry, bleach in the cabinet) have essentially indefinite shelf life for this use.

Practical recommendation: use the sachets that come with purchased bouquets, and mix the homemade recipe otherwise.

Common mistakes
Doubling concentrations. More sugar means more bacterial food. Stay at the 2 teaspoons per litre.
Using apple cider vinegar instead of white. Cider vinegar contains sugars that feed bacteria. Use white vinegar or lemon juice.
Skipping the bleach. Without a biocide the recipe fails within 24 hours in warm rooms. All three ingredients matter.
Using tap water in hard-water areas. Chlorinated municipal tap water above 1 ppm chlorine can burn cut stems. Use filtered or bottled water in hard-water regions.
Warm water. Warm water dissolves sugar faster but shocks stems. Always cool (10-20°C).
Not refreshing. The whole solution goes bacterial after 2-3 days. Refresh, recut, resupply food.
The one-minute test
After 24 hours in the vase, observe the water.
- Clear and slightly acidic tasting: working correctly
- Cloudy or smelly: bacterial bloom — refresh immediately
- Green algae film: sunlight exposure — move vase away
