Vase life is set before the flowers reach the water, so at the shop choose firm stems with no limp patches, fresh green foliage without yellowing, and a clean cut end with no slime or sour smell at the water line.

Conditioning, step by step
Cut when the slender spikes are well coloured but before the lowest florets fade. Strip lower foliage, recut on a slant and condition in clean water with flower food. Keep cool and change the water regularly to stop the leaves fouling it.
