How to Keep Camassia Fresh — Care & Vase Life

Camassia care from a florist: how to choose fresh stems, condition them step by step, and get 5-8 days of vase life from every stem.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

Camassia sends up slender, tapering spires of star-shaped flowers in soft blues, violets and creamy whites, opening gradually from the base of the spike. A prairie and meadow native, it gives florists a graceful, naturalistic line flower that adds vertical rhythm and gentle colour to spring designs. Its wild-hyacinth look suits garden-style bouquets, tall arrangements and loose installations. Blooming across April and May, it captures the fresh, untamed feel of a spring meadow.

TL;DR. Camassia: 5-8 days of vase life. Condition upright in deep cool water. Cut the tall spikes and condition upright in deep, cool water so the stems stay straight and the buds open from the base upward.

Camassia — care and vase life

How to choose fresh Camassia

In care terms this is a moderately demanding flower in the mid price bracket, with a seasonal peak in April, May. Vase life is set before the flowers reach the water, so at the shop choose firm stems with no limp patches, fresh green foliage without yellowing, and a clean cut end with no slime or sour smell at the water line.

For varieties, palette and season, see the Camassia encyclopedia entry.

Conditioning, step by step

Cut the tall spikes and condition upright in deep, cool water so the stems stay straight and the buds open from the base upward. Strip any lower foliage below the waterline and keep the water fresh to avoid fouling. Camassia is sensitive to ethylene, so keep it clear of ripening produce. Store cool and upright to prevent the tips from bending toward the light.

The base protocol, on top of the species specifics:

  1. Work with a clean tool in a clean vase — bacteria are the number-one enemy of vase life.
  2. Recut the stem on a sharp diagonal, taking off 2-3 cm.
  3. Strip every leaf below the waterline — submerged foliage rots and fouls the water.
  4. Let the flowers drink somewhere cool, out of direct sun and away from heat sources.

Why a diagonal cut and clean water do most of the work — in the general flower conditioning guide.

What matters most in Camassia care

  • Condition upright in deep cool water.
  • Strip lower foliage below the waterline.
  • Keep away from ripening fruit and ethylene.
  • Store cool and upright to keep stems straight.
  • Refresh water to prolong the opening spike.

How long Camassia last in a vase

Expect 5-8 days with proper conditioning. To reach the top of that range: change the water every 2-3 days, recut a centimetre at each change, keep the flowers cool and away from direct sun and fruit, and remove spent blooms so they don't foul the water for the rest.

How this compares with other flowers — in the vase life by species guide.

What to use instead of Camassia

If camassia are out of season or over budget, florists reach for flowers with a similar shape and role:
