Bouvardia Meaning — Symbolism, Colours & Gifting

What do bouvardias symbolise? Their meaning in the language of flowers, colour by colour, plus when to give them — a florist's gifting guide.

By Sofya VeyberPublished

Bouvardia is a Mexican member of the coffee family, carrying tight clusters of slender four-petalled stars in white, pink, coral and red — the white forms delicately scented. Its airy heads add texture and a soft, hand-gathered feel to bouquets, and it has long been a wedding favourite. Bouvardia is notoriously thirsty and ethylene-sensitive, wilting fast if allowed to dry, so it rewards attentive conditioning. Used well, it brings a fresh, starry filler few other flowers can match.

TL;DR. Bouvardias stand for enthusiasm, zest and warmth in the language of flowers. Colour shifts the message — red for love, white for purity, pink for gratitude.

Bouvardia — meaning and symbolism

What Bouvardias symbolise

In the language of flowers bouvardias carry meanings of enthusiasm, zest and warmth. A bouquet is never only decorative — the flower you choose, and the colour you choose it in, is a message. That is what makes bouvardias such a considered gift: they say something the card alone cannot.

For the botany, varieties and full profile, see the Bouvardia encyclopedia entry.

Bouvardias by colour — what each shade says

Bouvardias come in several colours, and each one tilts the meaning:

  • White bouvardias — purity, sympathy and fresh starts.
  • Pink bouvardias — gratitude, admiration and gentle affection.
  • Red bouvardias — love and passion.
  • Coral bouvardias — warmth and lively affection.

When to give Bouvardias

Bouvardias are a natural fit for weddings and bridal bouquets. Match the colour to the sentiment — love, thanks, congratulations or comfort — and the bouquet does the talking. For seasonal timing and what pairs well, see the Bouvardia entry.

Bouvardias in a meaningful bouquet

Meaning works best when it is intentional. Choose the colour for the message, keep the number of stems in mind (in many traditions odd numbers are for joy), and let the recipient know what the flowers say. Then give them the care they deserve — see how to keep bouvardias fresh — so the message lasts as long as possible.
